Red Cross Messages

The tracing service of the German Red Cross enables the exchange of messages between members of a family or a family for whom communication has become interrupted due to war, unrest or natural catastrophes, and contact cannot be restored using regular ways (telephone, post).

What is a Red Cross Message?

Sri Lanka, Batticaloa., Kiran Camp for refugees. An IKRK employee and a mother with children read a Red Cross family message. D. Sansoni/ICRCA Red Cross Message is an open letter that contains only family news. A special A5 form is used that is delivered to the addressee though the international Tracing Service network.

Thanks to the neutrality of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) acknowledged worldwide, we are able to send family messages across borders and lines of conflict in times of war or an armed conflict.

In order not to jeopardise the neutral role of the ICRC the family messages may not contain any political, military or discriminatory text at all. The authorities in the conflict areas are allowed to read the messages.

Our ability to deliver family messages worldwide depends heavily on the information that you can give us, as well as the specific circumstances and the security contitions in the respective country.
